Beer + Vacation = Brewcation. A Dogfish Head Brewery 360 Degree Experience.

In honor of some upcoming trips I have planned (Savannah Craft Brew Fest and Oktoberfest) I wanted to share the Brewcation that started it all. Before this trip I had visited breweries while on vacation, but not until this trip had the ONLY purpose been to drink beer. What a great time!

The beer delivery truck guy actually pulled over to take this picture for us

As a Christmas gift a few years back a friend and I got each of our husbands this brewcation as a gift. Meghan, Dave, Ron and I headed off to Milton, Delaware to visit Dogfish Head Brewery. We arrived on a Friday morning and (after waiting a few hours for Meghan's lost luggage) drove to the brewery in Milton for a tour. The tour was your typical brewery tour. Once you have been on one I feel like there is little difference between them all in the tour itself.  There were a few highlights at Dogfish like the little keg system that started it all, Sir Hops Alot and the huge bulletproof Palo Santo fermentation tanks.

Then came the best part of ANY brewery tour, the free samples! Those samples resulted in us buying so much beer it wouldn’t even fit in our suitcases. Well played DFH, well played.

The result. We had to stop at a home depot, buy a Rubbermaid tote, and tape together this contraption to bring all of our beer home….. Keep it classy San Diego!

Our digs for the trip were in a bed and breakfast called the Inn at Canal Square. The folks at the inn were very accommodating and put us in a 2 bedroom suite so we could all stay together. Our room (more like an apartment) was stocked with Dogfish Head beer, pint glasses, coffee mugs, beer soap and other beer related goodies.  Nice touch. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures at the B&B worthy of sharing.

We spent Saturday morning cruising the town and then Saturday night, Sam, the head brewer/owner, picked us up at the B&B in the S.S. Dogfish for a ride up the river to the Dogfish Head Rehoboth Beach Brewpub. We talked shop, got some homebrewing tips from a master and enjoyed a few of Sam’s favorite beers before we got dropped off for a night at the brewpub. What a treat to meet Sam and hear his story.

In Rehoboth we took a slight detour to play a few carnival games and ride a few rides at the pier.

Then went to work spending our $100 gift certificates (part of the package) at the brewpub. At the end of the night getting the cab ride included with the package ended up being a nightmare but, like the luggage, we eventually made it.

Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this package deal or for you to plan a brewcation of your own.
